Circles of Cobb County is Bringing Hope to Low Income Families in Cobb

Seeing a need for a mentoring program for families trapped in the cycle of generational poverty, CCF was instrumental in bringing Circles to Cobb.  Now, Circles Cobb begins its first cohort of individuals and families moving from poverty to financial stability with weekly meetings each Tuesday evening starting August 22nd at Living Stone Church in Marietta off Austell Road.  Each meeting begins with a meal shared as a community with volunteers, participants and their children.  Childcare is included and children are learning some of the same lessons as their parents – this is multi-generational approach.

In the Circles model, each participant (called Circle leader) is paired with 2 volunteer Allies who come alongside the Circle leader to support them in achieving their goals.  Goals vary and might include paying off debt, buying a reliable car, moving to a higher paying position, going back to school, improving credit scores to purchase a home, just to name a few.  “Poverty can isolate families at a time when they need connection the most. Intentional friendships with a community of caring individuals who want Circle leaders to succeed and are willing to walk with them step by step as they achieve their goals is key.” shared Barbara Garner, Executive Director. While Circle leaders are navigating their way out of poverty, their successes and challenges are shared with local community leaders.  The barriers that keep people in poverty are identified, discussed, and often resolved.

Circles USA has been around for 25 years and there are 80+ chapters throughout the US and Canada.  Data from these chapters shows us that families who stick with the program for 18 months achieve a 76% increase in their earned income and continues to increase even after the 18-month period.  They also see substantial increases in employment, education, home ownership and the number of people they can call on in an emergency.  This program has transformed lives across the nation.
