Philanthropists of the Year 2025: Barry and Debbie Abernathy

We’re proud to share that Barry and Debbie Abernathy, founders of E. Smith Heating and Air, have been honored as the 2025 Philanthropists of the Year by the Cobb Community Foundation.

This prestigious award recognizes their deep commitment to giving back and the meaningful difference they’ve made across our community through generous support of local causes and nonprofit organizations.

A Legacy of Giving

The Abernathys mark a historic milestone for the award as its first second-generation recipients. Debbie is the daughter of Earl and Rachel Smith, the namesake of Marietta Square’s Strand Theatre. Her father, Earl Smith, received the award in 2007, continuing a family tradition of civic leadership and philanthropy.

The James L. Rhoden, Jr. Award

The James L. Rhoden, Jr. Award for Visionary Philanthropy was created by the Cobb Community Foundation’s board in conjunction with its 10th anniversary in 2003. It honors CCF’s founder, James L. Rhoden, Jr., one of Cobb County’s most influential civic leaders.

Rhoden has spent decades championing the principle of “paying your civic rent,” helping build and sustain nonprofits across the community through his time, talent, and treasure. Each year, the CCF Board of Directors selects a business and community leader who exemplifies this commitment to service and impact. Past winners include Gov. Roy Barnes and former Georgia Attorney General Sam Olens.

Transformative Impact in Cobb

Barry and Debbie Abernathy are widely recognized for their transformative philanthropy and hands-on leadership. Debbie’s longstanding involvement with the Earl and Rachel Smith Strand Theatre, where she serves on the Board of Trustees, has helped preserve and elevate one of Cobb’s most iconic cultural institutions.

She has also led and supported key community organizations, including serving as Board Chair of the Center for Family Resources and being an active member of the Junior League of Cobb-Marietta.

Together, the Abernathys extend their service through their leadership at Smith Heating & Air , fostering a company culture deeply committed to giving back. Under their guidance, the company has become a steadfast partner in initiatives such as the Center for Family Resources’ Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive and continues to support organizations like Calvary Children’s Home, the Sunshine Kids Foundation, SafePath, and local Kiwanis programs.

Their philanthropy also enhances health and community well-being through support for the Good Samaritan Health Center of Cobb, the Aviation History & Technology Center, the Big Chicken Chorus, and other local initiatives.

Exemplifying the Award

Barry and Debbie Abernathy exemplify what this award represents. They lead with humility, give generously, and consistently mobilize their resources—both personal and professional—to lift others.

Their legacy strengthens Cobb County today and will continue to inspire future generations of community leaders.
