In the heart of Marietta, Georgia, a transformative initiative is underway to address a pressing issue: the plight of unhoused students and their families. More than 500 students in Marietta City Schools are unhoused, and many of them struggle to focus on education while facing the daily uncertainty of where they will sleep at night. Emmanuel’s Village is stepping up to provide stable housing solutions, giving these students and their families a chance to thrive.
The Genesis of Emmanuel’s Village
The inspiration behind Emmanuel’s Village is both heartfelt and unique. It all began with Luke Holm, the son of Glory Haus founder Molly Holm. Moved by the struggles of Tim, a homeless employee, Luke embarked on a mission to make a difference—starting with homemade pickles. Through his Pickles with a Purpose initiative, Luke raised enough funds to house Tim for four years. This act of kindness ignited a larger vision: creating a community where unhoused families could find stability and hope.

Overcoming Challenges
Affordable housing developments often face significant hurdles, particularly concerning zoning laws. There’s a prevalent concern that such housing might devalue surrounding properties, leading to resistance against new projects. However, the team behind Emmanuel’s Village identified a unique opportunity. By selecting a plot of land situated in an industrial area behind the Glory Haus warehouse, they were able to navigate a path to success. This strategic choice not only made the project feasible but also set a precedent for innovative solutions to housing challenges in the region.
A Community Designed for Impact
Scheduled to welcome its first residents in the fall of 2025, Emmanuel’s Village will consist of 15 tiny homes. Each dwelling, measuring between 24 and 32 feet, is thoughtfully designed to include two lofts, a full bathroom, a galley kitchen, and a washer and dryer. These homes offer more than just shelter; they provide a dignified living space where children can focus on their education without the stress of instability. Beyond housing, the village will feature communal spaces, playgrounds, and community gardens, fostering a sense of belonging and mutual support among residents.

The Significance for Cobb County
Cobb County and its cities have long grappled with the challenge of providing affordable housing. Zoning regulations have often stymied efforts to develop such projects. Emmanuel’s Village stands as a testament to what can be achieved when the community unites with a shared vision. By repurposing industrial land and focusing on innovative housing solutions, this project addresses the immediate needs of unhoused families while avoiding the pitfalls that often accompany such a project.
